When you move, you almost always have a few heavy, oddly-shaped items you must deal with. These items can throw a wrench into your smooth move, especially if you are planning a move without movers. For help with these large items, follow these 5 steps.
Step 1: Identify Heavy Items
Go through your house and make a list of all the heavy items you will need to pack. Take measurements of the items and get their weight. You can usually use a standard bathroom scale to weigh the objects.
Step 2: Find Proper Packing Items
Once you know how large and heavy your items are, you can purchase the proper equipment for moving them. This includes boxes, bubble wrap, good quality tape and other packing materials. Buy your packing materials at a moving company. They can offer you the best advice on what you will need.
Step 3: Wrap, Wrap, Wrap
Carefully wrap the item(s) so that they will be well-protected in case of shifting in the truck or being handled during the move. Depending on the size and weight of the item that you are wrapping, it may take two people. Do not attempt to lift bulky, awkward and heavy items on your own.
Step 4: Test the Boxes
Pack the heavy item in a box that is designed to hold the weight and shape of the object. Do not try to “wing it” with just any box. The box must be strong enough to keep the item safe during the move and the transporting of the item on and off the moving truck.
Step 5: Label Each Box
Mark the boxes appropriately to let the movers know if the item is fragile or if it should stay upright. For your own sake, label what room the item goes in for efficient unpacking!
Packing heavy items can be challenging and difficult. Professional movers are trained in how to efficiently and carefully pack heavy items so that they will not incur damage during a move. With careful attention to the proper techniques and materials for the packing of heavy objects, you can do the job yourself, but it can be time consuming and can result in a damaged item and even injury if done improperly.
