How to Clean out Your Home Before Moving

Moving requires sorting through, packaging and relocating all of your belongings. Furniture, clothes, appliances –your entire life packed into an abundance of boxes. People sometimes make the mistake of taking every item to their new home and refusing to throw anything away, which often makes the move more difficult than it needs to be. You can save a lot of time and energy if you assess each object in your house before you pack it, and consider whether or not it’s necessary to keep or has surpassed its usefulness.

Furniture:old chair, moving tips

Furniture is definitely the most difficult thing to pack, move and reorganize in your new home. It’s not only the heaviest of all objects in your house, but also the most difficult to squeeze out the front door. Curb some of that hassle by considering whether it’s time to retire your furniture before lugging it to your new home. Older pieces that show obvious signs of abuse or wear and tear should be the first choice for disposal. Couches over ten years old, for example, can suffer a lot of damage. The interior sags, which makes your couch unsteady and less comfortable, or maybe it creaks at the slightest movement as if it’s almost ready to fall apart. Bed frames, likewise, might be better left in your old home. The typical wooden frame becomes unstable and rickety over time. Though they have a longer lifespan than your couch, old bedroom pieces can be affordably and easily replaced.

Clothes:

Trimming your wardrobe should make for an easy downsizing. Gather all of your clothes and examine whether they still have value. If they no longer fit, have any holes, are worn out, or you can’t remember the last time you wore them, then there is no reason for you to take them with you. Damaged clothes can go in the trash, and the items that just don’t fit or that you no longer use can go to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. After lightening your load, you’ll have an easier time unpacking and organizing your wardrobe.

Appliances:

Appliances should also be considered for disposal. Smaller appliances that you don’t use everyday — such as blenders or food processors — may last longer than your clothes or your furniture. If they’re still in working order, there’s no reason to throw them out. Depending on their age and condition, you might want to get rid of old toasters and microwaves. It’ll be easier to upgrade to a newer version when you move into your new place. The same goes for larger appliances — washing machines, refrigerators, stoves — which experience a decrease in function and style as they age.
