Moving at the height of the holiday season can be incredibly stressful. While relocating during the holidays is not ideal, there are several tips and techniques for implementing a smooth transition from one home to the next without creating additional strain.
5 Tips for an Easy Transition
- Enlist the Help of the Family
Packing and organizing will be most efficient with help from your immediate family. Instruct the kids to pack and get their room move-ready, so their school break and moving day will be less stressful. Implementing a checklist of items that needs to be packed and ready to go may take the guesswork out of what should be packed first. - Leave the Heavy Lifting to the Movers
Packing and boxing up your home should be a priority; allow the heavy items to be moved by the movers. Organize and pile boxes out of the way of furniture that will be carried out, and allow the moving company and crew to safely move the bigger items. - Coordinate, Prepare, and Schedule
Plan ahead in advance, and get all required moving necessities done. For example, call ahead and notify the utility company to turn off your utilities on a select date; arrange for an estimate and get your moving day situated with the moving company; and put in your change of address and mail forwarding notification. Knock out the smaller stuff in advance for a focused moving day. - Traffic and Weather
Be sure to diligently follow the weather. Moving in winter weather can be stressful; however, the moving company will be able to provide you with situational protocols that may be of use during colder weather. In addition, winterize your car and the house, so there are no additional worries on top of the move. - Have Holiday Décor Ready for the New Home
Enjoy the spirit of the holidays, and decorate your new home. Adornments will put some holiday cheer and spirit into your new home, while easing the stress of moving.
When the move is completed, get back on track with the holidays by reducing any stress. Play some holiday music while unpacking; indulge a little bit with some holiday vittles; play holiday movies; and explore the new area and make new friends with the neighbors.
