9 Tips For Packing For Your Move

Packing for a move is a big job no matter how you look at it, but a little planning and preparation makes it a lot easier. Here are a few tips to help you pack like a pro.

Packing For The Move

  • Consider having a yard sale. You might be surprised at what people would buy and it’s a good way to earn a little extra money for your move. Plus, the less you have to pack, the better.
  • Organize your stuff by category. As you begin packing, focus on one category at a time. Having all your clothes, dishes, books, toys, etc. together will make unpacking a lot easier.
  • Don’t pack all at once. Start several months ahead of time and do it little by little, instead of trying to do it all in a day or two. Set a goal for each week. One week pack the garage, the next week pack your guest room or closets, all the way until each room has been packed. Make sure to save parts of the house you still use for last, like the kitchen and your bedroom.
  • Keep essentials separate. There are some things you’ll need immediately upon arriving at your new home, like toiletries and utensils. Consider using a clear plastic box to differentiate it from all the others. Also, be sure to pack a bag of things that you know you will need during your transition from house to house.
  • Label multiple times. Mark your boxes on at least two sides and on top so you can read them not matter how they’re stacked. Labeling your boxes is one of the most important rules. This way you or a professional mover knows which room to take each box when unloading the moving truck.
  • Seal spill-able items. Place a piece of Saran wrap or a baggie under the caps of shampoo, detergent, bleach, etc. to make them virtually spill proof. The last thing you want to do is open a box to find soap has exploded on everything.
  • Pack your dishes vertically. This is safer than stacking them flat in boxes, just make sure to use plenty of padding both below and between them. Bubble wrap or newspaper can help add cushion between the plates to ensure nothing gets broken.
  • Use your chests and drawers. Most people empty out the drawers of their furniture when they move, but that’s valuable space that can be put to work carrying things. Make sure the drawers are not to heavy for you to carry to and from the moving truck. Use this as a good opportunity to find some things for your yard sale.

Helpful Tips for Moving with Pets

Moving can be a stressful time for every member of the family. Our pets can feel anxious and uncertain during this time too. With a little advanced planning and preparation, pets can make a successful transition to their new home. Here are a few tips to help things go smoothly.

Before Your Move

Prior to moving day, visit the vet to make sure your pet’s recommended vaccinations are up to date. Fill prescriptions for any needed pet medications. If moving a long distance, obtain a copy of your pet’s health records to take along to the new vet.

A pet carrier or crate will be needed for transporting your dog, cat, or another small animal in the car. If your pets aren’t used to being crated, they should ideally spend some time in the crate before the move. A favorite treat or toy may help your pet acclimate. The crate can become their familiar place of safety and security during the busy packing and loading process.

If your move will involve a lengthy car trip, pack a take along bag for your pet. Items to bring include a leash, water bowl, food, and a favorite toy or two. Make sure to walk your dog at rest stops and allow for potty time. Some animals may not be interested in eating during the trip, but always offer water to keep them hydrated. Remember to book pet friendly lodgings if overnight stops are necessary.

After Your Move

After arriving at your new home, introduce the pet slowly to its new surroundings. Cats are especially sensitive to their environment, so it may be best to limit them to one room at a time. Dogs should be kept on a leash outside until they become familiar with the new yard. Even obedient pets have been known to run off from unfamiliar surroundings. Make sure they are wearing an ID collar with your current contact information. With a little extra love and attention from their owners, most pets will quickly adapt to their new home.

Cleaning Out Before the Big Move

Warning: include(/home/acwhite/public_html/wp-content/themes/AC White/inc/meta.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/acwhite/public_html/wp-content/themes/AC White/archive.php on line 38

An impending move often forces us to sort through the items in our lives. It’s a great time to clean out closets, basements, and garages of unwanted or unused items. Reducing the amount of stuff that must be moved saves both time and money. This is an opportunity to take a hard look at clothing, furniture, and household goods that can be sold, donated, or thrown away.

There is no point in paying to move a large item, only to find that it just doesn’t work in a new floorplan. Furniture that is currently being used may not fit in a new home or apartment. If it is time to replace a worn sofa or mattress, it may be better to get rid of it prior to the move and replace it later.

Many people have closets full of clothes that are no longer being worn. It may be time to clean out items that are out of style, no longer fit, or haven’t been worn in a year or more. Gently used clothing can be donated to a number of charitable organizations. Clothing that is worn out should be thrown away.

Food items are often difficult to move. Ideally, many things in the pantry and refrigerator can be used up beforehand. Dry goods can be packed but are heavy to move. It may be better to donate them to a food pantry and replace at the new location. Moving companies are generally not able to transport refrigerated and frozen food. If the move is a local one, these types of food items could be carried in a cooler in the car.

Most moving companies are prohibited from moving hazardous materials. Do not plan on packing cleaning solvents, aerosol cans, bleach, paint, varnish, kerosene, pesticides, fertilizer, matches, or fireworks. These types of items will need to be disposed of properly or carried in the car. Always check with the moving company to get a comprehensive list of items that cannot be transported.

Sorting and cleaning out may not be a pleasant chore. However, getting rid of some of these things before a move means not having to unpack them at the new destination. Don’t wait until the last minute to get started!

4 Things You Must Know When Planning A Long-Distance Move

Warning: include(/home/acwhite/public_html/wp-content/themes/AC White/inc/meta.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/acwhite/public_html/wp-content/themes/AC White/archive.php on line 38

When you’re just moving from the city out to suburbs or from one small town to the next, moving is hard enough. But when you’re moving across the state or across the country, things can get really complicated unless you’re prepared. If you’ve never moved a long distance — and going off to college or basic training right out of high school doesn’t count — then you need to know what to expect. Don’t let your excitement to arrive at your new place cause you to fail to plan. Here’s what you really need to know.

Don’t be afraid to purge.

Most of us collect a lot of junk over the years. It is never more evident than when it’s time to move. All of the extra disposable food containers and clothes you never wear start flying out of the cabinets and closets like they have a mind of their own. And it’s time to really think about what you want to take with you. Not only will extra weight possibly cost you a little more, but you can’t very well make several trips if it doesn’t all fit in the van. So do the responsible thing:

  • recycle
  • throw away
  • donate

Or

  • have a yard sale and then donate the rest

Don’t be tempted bring yard sale stuff back in and put it in a box marked “new home” after you already decided to get rid of it.

Think about where you’re going. Are you moving to Alaska? Then you really don’t need that surfboard. But you might want to hang onto those ski pants you bought on a whim last year even though winters where you live never drop below 40. Send everything you don’t need to its proper home and lighten your load for the move. It means a faster unpack and enjoying your home sooner.

Develop a plan.

Most of us know to put the room name on the box, so the wok and rice cooker don’t end up in the bathroom, but also think about what you will need first. When you get to your new location, you’ll likely be exhausted and maybe even jet lagged. The last thing you are going to want to do is unpack everything that night just to find out which box has the clean socks or your toothbrush. We will not support you wearing the same clothes or not brushing your teeth for the days it may take you to unpack after a big move. Pack a suitcase with everything you’ll need to be comfortable for at least a few days and you’ll be much happier when you get there.

Don’t try to do it on your own.

It’s one thing when you’re moving across town and you may be able to bribe some friends with a nice dinner or pizza — depending on your friends. It is quite another when you’re moving somewhere completely new. Don’t undervalue the time it will take you to pack and unpack. Are you better off paying someone to help you, especially with securing breakables and heirlooms? If you have to take time off work, would it be better to work that extra day and then get some help?

Stay calm. It will be so worth it.

The best thing to do during a long-distance move is to try to relax. Your head will be clearer and the process will go so much smoother.

Benefits of Climate Controlled Storage

Whether planning a local or long distance move, temporary storage is often a necessity. Storage of excess items can be helpful when getting a home ready to sell. When it becomes necessary to vacate a property before the next one is ready to occupy, storage is a must. Climate controlled storage may be the best option when a long period of time is involved.

Climate controlled storage means that goods are kept at a constant temperature, typically between 55 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity levels can also be controlled. Extreme variations in temperature and humidity can damage wood furniture, causing cracking of wood, warping of items, and expanding and contracting due to heat and cold. Climate controlled storage should always be considered when storing antiques and irreplaceable items.

High levels of humidity can lead to rust and corrosion, particularly in appliances, electronics, and photography equipment. Mold and mildew can ruin fabrics, upholstery, leather goods, clothing, books, and artwork. In addition, items stored in facilities that are not climate controlled may be more susceptible to damage from dust, insects, and other pests.

When planning to store household goods, make a list of items that may need to be accessed more easily. Those should be placed so they can be reached without moving other items. Pack like items together. Make sure to pack fragile items in appropriate boxes or containers with bubble wrap or other suitable packing materials. Always label boxes for content. Old sheets and blankets are useful for covering and protecting furniture. If a furniture piece must be disassembled, keep the pieces together. Zip lock bags are handy for keeping any necessary hardware together. Place the bags in a drawer or tape to the underside of the furniture piece.

A.C. White can provide access to storage through its more than 1,000 partners worldwide. They can arrange for the pickup and delivery of the items. Climate controlled storage can offer peace of mind during a move and transition period.

If there was one piece of advice our professional movers want to emphasize, it is to never wait too long to ready yourself for moving day. You can be the most organized person around, but chances are something unexpected will come up that will throw you off course.

It does not take much to escalate a minor setback into a full-blown catastrophe, which is why early preparation is essential for every residential and commercial relocation. Does this mean you need to bust out the packing tape months ahead of time? Not quite, but if you are not at least making phone calls to local Atlanta moving companies four weeks out from the big day, then you could very well run into some unneeded problems.
